Could you ditch the gym and play video games instead?

23 Aug, 2021

If you’re anything like us, then you probably can’t keep up the gym routine for more than a few weeks at a time. But, there’s good news – you can burn those calories by playing video games instead!

Here at Stakester, we took it upon ourselves to carry out an experiment to see if our collective gaming grind had any hidden benefits and the results might surprise you!

How we did it

So we were a little more scientific than the gif… We hooked up our 50 volunteers to devices which tracked their heart rate and energy consumption – these two statistics were recorded whilst participants played video games and whilst they did a number of sit ups. From that data, we were then able to calculate their calorie burn for each activity and compare the two.

The results are in

Surprisingly, you can burn a crazy amount of calories from sitting and playing video games! We found that in 2 hours of gameplay, you can burn around 420 calories if you’re a man or 472 if you’re a woman – not bad for a few hours of fun.

What’s even more impressive is that those numbers are the equivalent of doing 1000 sit ups, and we know which activity we’d prefer to do!

Burn off those snacks

So we’ve given you the numbers, but what does that actually mean in the real world? What can an afternoon of FIFA or Warzone mean for your calorie burn?

Well, it’ll take around the length of one game of Warzone to burn off the crisps you had with your lunch, or around 1hr 4 minutes for the Big Mac you treated yourself to. If Greggs is more your style, then you’ll need a lengthy 1hr 23 minute gaming session to burn off those calories!

Come and get involved

Put your spare time to good use by using your gaming skills to win money and prizes and burn those calories at the same time! We offer a whole host of games, such as FIFA 21, Rocket League and Warzone, so there’s a competition for everyone on our app.

This is what we play for!

P.s. Strength training and cardio is still a good idea…
